# Update and roll back

> Update Hivemind from the app or a terminal, switch between stable and nightly builds, and go back to an older release.

Update when the app says a new version is out, or go back to an older one if a release breaks something for you.

<AgentPrompt description="Paste this into your coding agent to update Hivemind, or roll it back to one release." page="update-and-roll-back">{`
Update Hivemind on this computer, or roll it back to the release I name.

1. Record the current version with \`hive --version\`.
2. On macOS, check whether the app is open. If it is, ask me to quit it first: the installer does not replace a running app on macOS.
3. To update: run \`hivemind upgrade\`. To roll back or pin a version: on Linux and macOS run \`bash <(curl -fsSL https://hivemind.griiken.com/install.sh) --version <tag>\`; on Windows run \`& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://hivemind.griiken.com/install.ps1))) -Version <tag>\`. Tags look like \`v2026.10.3\`; ask me which one.
4. Check \`hive --version\` prints the version expected. If the app was open on Linux, tell me to restart it to finish.
5. In each project that uses Hivemind's agent skills, run \`hive add skill\` to refresh them.

At the end, tell me the old and the new version.

## Update from the app [#update-from-the-app]

<Steps>
  <Step title="Press Update available">
    When a new release is out, the toolbar shows **Update available**. Press it. It shows **Updating…** while it downloads.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Press Restart to finish">
    When it shows **Restart to finish**, press it. The app restarts on the new version.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Your agents keep running in the background process while the app restarts.

## Update from a terminal [#update-from-a-terminal]

```bash
hivemind upgrade
```

`hivemind upgrade` runs the installer again. It does nothing when you are already on the newest version. `hive upgrade` does the same.

<Note>
On macOS, quit Hivemind first. The installer does not replace a running app there, and says `hivemind is running — the app was NOT upgraded`.
</Note>

After an update, refresh the agent skills in each project that uses them:

```bash
hive add skill
```

## Switch channels [#switch-channels]

| Channel | Gets | Switch with |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | each release | `bash install.sh --channel stable` |
| Nightly | a build from `main`, every day | `bash install.sh --channel nightly` |

On Windows, use `-Channel stable` or `-Channel nightly`. Upgrades stay on the channel you chose, and so does the app's update check.

## Roll back [#roll-back]

To install one exact release, older ones too, name its tag:

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Linux and macOS">
    ```bash
    bash <(curl -fsSL https://hivemind.griiken.com/install.sh) --version v2026.10.2
    ```
  </Tab>
  <Tab title="Windows">
    ```powershell
    & ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://hivemind.griiken.com/install.ps1))) -Version v2026.10.2
    ```
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Every release and its tag is on [GitHub Releases](https://github.com/dip497/hivemind/releases). What changed in each is in the [Changelog](https://hivemind.griiken.com/guide/changelog/).

An update may have moved your data to a new shape. To put it back too, quit the app and run `hive migrations restore <change>` with the older version installed: [When an update changes your data](https://hivemind.griiken.com/guide/data-updates/).

## Check it worked [#check-it-worked]

```bash
hive --version
```

It prints the version you chose.

## If it didn't work [#if-it-didnt-work]

| What you see | Fix |
|---|---|
| `hivemind is running — the app was NOT upgraded` | Quit Hivemind, then run `hivemind upgrade` again. |
| Agents gone after the update | See [Agents stopped after an upgrade](https://hivemind.griiken.com/guide/troubleshooting/#agents-stopped-after-an-upgrade). |
| `upgrade failed` | Check you are online, and that `curl` is installed. |
